I live in Washington Grove, MD, which was originally a Methodist church camp and is now a unique incorporated ‘town within a forest’. We have wooden road signs which were originally all floral and fauna illustrations done by Jim Fletcher, who was an amazing artist and resident of the Grove. He passed away several years ago after a long illness and when it was suggested that his signs be replaced with commercial metallic signs, a bunch of us protested and a campaign to replace the old signs with refurbished wooden signs was born. I feel lucky to be one of the many contributors since I was asked if I would illustrate some of the signs. I did 39 of the over 150 illustrated signs and here are several close-up examples of my creations as well as 3 on sight pictures of installed signs. All signs are handcarved and illustrated with acrylic paint which is covered by a waterproof coating to preserve and protect it from the outdoor elements.
